Happy Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa, a festival which marks the arrival of spring and the reaping of Rabi crops is being celebrated all over the country today. The festival coincides with the start of the nine day long festival Chaitra Navratri in the North. Gudi Padwa is widely celebrated in Maharashtra and Goa and is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra, month to mark the beginning of the New year according to the Hindu calendar. On this day people start the day with an oil bath and prepare rangolis and make Gudi flags (made from bright silk scarfs, garlanded with flowers, mango and neem leaves, topped with upturned silver or copper vessel). Dancing and indulging in special food is part of the celebrations.
