Walt Disney’s classic tale, Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson released a few days back, and needless to say we loved the movie and Emma herself. But do you know that the movie has an Indian connection, and that is the use of Indian embroideries for Emma’s garments. Indian embroideries are famous all over the world, and the recent use of traditional kutch Aari embroidery in the costumes of the movie has proved it yet again.

The assistant costume designer for the movie Sinead O’ Sullivan shared a Instagram picture and the story behind the garment, which is embroidered by two brothers from Bhuj.

As a part of her commitment to ‘ Who made my clothes’ initiative, she shared a post which goes like this…..

thecostumedirectory Belle’s bodice from@Beautyandthebeast was beautifully hand embroidered by artisan brothers Kasam and Juma in Bhuj, Western India. They used a technique called “Aari work” which is a very fine chain stitch traditional to the Kutch area of Gujarat. This style lent itself very nicely to this eighteenth century French floral design. Emma is a great supporter of sustainable fashion in her personal life, and seems she is making a mark and setting an example for others to go the same way by adorning beautiful sustainable pieces on the big screen as well.

Not only this, the red cape which she wore in the movie was 100% sustainable and the fabrics were sourced from different Fairtrade cooperatives from India and Nepal.
