I generally prefer making my own spice mixes at home, as they stay fresh for a longer period, and also it provides the joy of serving something fresh to the family.
And undoubtedly the taste cannot match anything which is store bought as they are grinded months before we actually use it.
Here are two of my favorite spice mix recipes which are super easy and they go down easily with everything…..
Seasoned Salt– This salt can be used to season vegetables and chicken before grilling. Mix 1/4th cup kosher salt, 4 tbsp ground pepper, 1 tbsp paprika, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1/2 tbsp onion powder, 1/2 tbsp ground red pepper or crushed red pepper flakes and mix everything in an airtight container. You can add a dash of sugar if you want a punch of sweetness to your spice mix.
Likewise you can also add dried parsley to this mixture. It also gives a great flavor to roasted potatoes and sauteed vegetables such as bell peppers, zucchini, squash, and carrots and other sauteed seasonal veggies. You can add it to soup recipes and eggs too. If you like it to be all well blended then grind everything into a mortar.
Lemon Pepper– If you like tangy flavor in your salads, chicken recipes and for different breakfast egg recipes, then this mix is for you. We often are left with the lemon peels which we wonder how to use as they are very useful. Well just grate it and sun dry them. If you are in a hurry then, bake them in lowest temperature in an oven and then use it for this recipe. But the zest should be completely dry. Mix lemon zest, pepper and salt in a grinder and the mix is ready. If you like the lemon zest to be visible, then skip grinding it and add it as is to a coarsely grounded pepper. For another version you can add sugar, onion, garlic and celery seeds in this mixture too. You can also skip adding salt in this mixture as lemon and pepper are the basic ingredients of this spice mix.
