Indian singer, music composer and lyricist Sona Mohapatra feature documentary directed by Deepti Gupta and produced by the artist herself, ‘Shut Up Sona’ has been honored with the Impact Docs Award in the US. The documentary has been produced by Mohapatra and her husband Ram Sampath through their OmGrown Films banner.
Director, Deepti Gupta says, “Ours is a universal tale and a film that’s relevant across cultures. I believe that Sona is the most fascinating person in our country right now to tell the story of the quest for women who are fighting for equality. A lot of her hit music is independent of Bollywood and she uses her voice not only in song but also in protest to stand up for her beliefs.Through her you see this prismatic reality of what India has been for years for women and what it is right now. I believe that our journey with the film is only getting started now.”
Director Deepti Gupta is one of the few female cinematographers in Hindi cinema and has also directed the music videos for the Sona Mohapatra’s tunes, including Aaja Ve, Diljale and Shyam Piya.
The Impact Docs Award award endeavours to support and promote filmmakers who are making a difference in the critical issues of our times through producing impactful documentaries…or making contributions to the world through enlightening and entertaining documentary films.
The other films in competition were ‘This LittleLand of Mines’ about the resilience of the Lao people, and Pushout: The criminalisation of black girls in school.
